Prior to PerDis, there will be the Comic Symposium 2015 on comics and space, hosted by the University of Fine Arts Saar (HBKSaar). Admission is free!
You can get some new perspectives on storytelling in urban spaces and new ideas to discuss at PerDis.
A good reason to come one day in advance.

Soenke Zehle Abstract - As envisioned by the pioneers of ambient intelligence, the technologies of communication, networking, and sensing are disappearing into the 'ambient commons' of our urban environments. Exemplified by the becoming-pervasive of displays and related infrastructures of visualization, ambient media refers to the environmentalization of media: from media as (separate) tool to media as environment. The focus on ambience captures the environmental character of media, but also recalls the holistic interest in the implications of ambient media. Still shared by ambient intelligence pioneers, this holism has become marginal to contemporary idioms of technological innovation. In the coming age of ambient media, we need to comprehend media both as a set of discrete technologies (subject to co-design, reappropriation, and collective governance) and a condition, changes in which call for a new politics of the environment. CV - Lecturer in Media Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Saar, Soenke Zehle also co-initiated and currently works as managing director of the academy's xm:lab - Experimental Media Lab. Drawing on his background in comparative literature, philosophy, and translation, he frequently co-develops arts-and-technology research projects with a particular focus on practice-based and transcultural approaches. Recent research has emphasized the relationship between algorithmic cultures and the status of aesthetic experience. For more info see http://www.xmlab.org/about/people/zehle/ Room: VisRoom |

This year the Symposium on Pervasive Displays will offer two tutorials. The tutorials will take place on June 10 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the University of Fine Arts Saar, prior to the opening event.
Instructor: Patrick Tobias Fischer, Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany
Architects have used digital systems to allow them to enhance their concept design with lighting technology or pneumatic displays for quite a while now. However, they seem to overlook the interactive possibilities and qualities of this medium beyond pre-produced and generative content. Creating interactivity around media facades seems generally difficult especially due to its interdisciplinary domain.
In this tutorial participants learn how media facades can generate different types of interactive spaces in front of the screen. An exercise based on a spatial model from human-computer interaction research helps participants to understand problems of imbalance in interaction design between human, interface, and the medium of the facade.
This knowledge can be put into practice by content creators as well as system developers, interaction and interface designers.
Instructors: Nigel Davies & Sarah Clinch, Lancaster University, UK
Researchers in pervasive displays systems are often interested in creating long-term experimental deployments of their systems and applications. However, these deployments often end-up being short-lived, and failing to deliver the comprehensive insights anticipated. In this tutorial participants will learn how to minimise the risks of a failed deployment of pervasive displays and to maximise the benefits from their investment of research time and money. We will cover thee distinct topics: (i) the practical design decisions for field-trials of pervasive display systems including how to manage stakeholder expectations; (ii) software design issues for long term deployments and (iii) applications and evaluation of deployed systems. The tutorial is useful to both application and system level researchers and attendees will have the opportunity to experiment with a live digital signage system that can be used to support a wide range of research work.
